About Melissa
Melissa is a PhD Candidate at Sam Houston State University. She is in her third year of the program and started teaching criminal justice classes at the University this past summer. She hopes to complete her degree by December 2012/May 2013 to start her professional career as a professor.
About Patrick
Patrick graduated from Sam Houston State University with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. He will start the police academy in January 2012 with the Alvin Law Enforcement Training Academy. He will graduate the academy and be a licensed Peace Officer in May 2012. He hopes to earn his masters degree within five years that will qualify him to be an adminstator for a Police department.
How we met
Patrick had to re-take an exam that he had missed in a criminal justice class in the Fall of 2010. He arranged to re-take the exam with his professor’s TA (which was one of Melissa’s best friends). Jeanne (the TA) arranged for Patrick to take the test in her office at Melissa’s desk. While taking the test, Patrick noticed the pictures on the wall and on the desk he was sitting at and found the woman in the pictures rather beautiful. Through a number of random circumstances, their paths crossed again and he managed to get a date with the woman from the pictures.

How we got engaged
Patrick and Melissa like to take walks on the Sam Houston campus together. On November 13th, Patrick asked Melissa to again take a walk on campus with their dog, Gringo. They walked up the steps to Austin Hall, a landmark on the Sam Houston Campus. When they walked around the building to the front lawn, Patrick got down to check on Gringo. He asked Melissa if it looked like Gringo had something on him. She checked and said, “No, Gringer is fine” and continued to play with him. When she turned around, Patrick was down on one knee. He opened the small box and a light turned on. He asked, “Melissa Jeanne Mauck, will you marry me?” She couldn’t believe it! “Really? Really? Really?” she kept asking. He just smiled and said yes. She ran to hug him and said yes.
